Southern California has a wealth of things to do and see, and we highly recommend you plan extra time if possible.

Our Convention Hotel will be the Marriott in Warner Center, Woodland Hills.  The rate will be $99 plus tax per night, and the hotel is centered in a lovely area, with upscale shopping across the street, restaurants within walking distance, a park right behind the hotel, with lovely, comfortable rooms.  There’s an exercise room, two pools, restaurants, and even a Starbucks in the lounge.  Parking will be at a reduced rate of $5.00 plus tax per day.

TO GET THE $99 GROUP HOTEL RATE
... you must call the hotel itself directly.
The U.S. hotel number is 818-887-4800, 8-5 (Pacific Time) M-F.
The International number is 800-228-9290, lines open 24/7 a week.
Mention "Automatic Mechanical Instrument Collectors' Association" for the group rate.
This rate is available 3-days before and after the convention dates so you can extend your trip for site-seeing on either end. Make your reservations early.  You need to be at the Hotel early, since the bus tours start early Wednesday morning, and you should plan on the Tuesday optional tour if possible.

~~~ Transportation ~~~
Transportation to/from the hotel can be by cab, but it will be cheaper to use SuperShuttle. Here is their $3 discount coupon specifically for our convention you can use right at the shuttle, they say that no reservations are necessary. Print one out for each person, and for both directions (to and from Hotel).
If you'd like to rent a car, we have a Special Rate Agreement with - just click on this icon to book your discounted car reservation.
            Tuesday will be the Board meeting.  For those of you not attending the meeting there will be an optional trip to the Gene Autry Museum, with displays both of western movie history and a separate section with timely displays having to do with the history of the West.  We’ll also visit  the Griffith Park Carousel, and Descanso Gardens, one of the prettiest places in Southern California.
            Our party features a bus trip North to San Sylmar to visit the Nethercutt Collection, lunch and a visit to the Nix collection, and a Southern trip to visit the Ames Collection in Solana Beach, with a stop at either the Schack or Choate collection.  These are all wonderful places to visit, with great instruments on display.  These are included in the registration fee.
            (San Sylmar limits their tours to people over  the age of 12, so no children on the North tour, and no jeans or shorts.  If  you can’t make this one due to those restrictions, though, the Nix collection will be open Sunday, July 6th by appointment. Details will be provided in the Hospitality room at the convention.)
            Wednesday and Thursday are the collection tours, with events in the Hotel in the evening. Wednesday night will feature a Welcome Pizza Dinner with entertainment.
            On the Fourth of July we’ll travel to the Ronald Reagan Library, which is a fascinating display, whether you are Republican, Democrat, or whatever.  It covers, of course, Ronald Reagan’s careers, both in movies and politics, but it is also a microcosm of an era most of us remember well.  There is a guided tour, and you can also go through Air Force One if you choose.
            We’ll go to the Hollywood Bowl for their extravaganza with patriotic music and fireworks, courtesy of the L.A. Philharmonic, a stirring event for sure. One word of caution, though, tickets may be limited, so register early.  Further tickets will be on an “as available” basis.
            The hospitality room will feature pianos, nickelodeons, and more to make it enjoyable to spend time and relax there.
            Workshops?  We have many planned, with such luminaries of the hobby as Dave Saul, Dave Ramey, Jr.,  Don Barr, Tim Trager, Josh Rapier, Ron Perry and Mike Ames, Bill Klinger, Richard Ingram and Leslie Hoffman. They will cover such topics as roll repair, materials and procedures for repairing pneumatic machines, Midi and Interface, Music of the 30’s and roll scanning and recutting, and differences between systems, building and servicing monkey organs, Organettes, and restoration of a pumper piano for beginners, along with “So You Want to Buy an Orchestrion?”
            The Mart will be full of things you really need, and we are going to have one of the largest marts ever, not limited to piano rolls, but anything having to do with the hobby of automatic music, from music boxes to orchestrions.
            There will be local and International entertainment, and the banquet will feature “The Titanic Jazz Band” with well-known pianist Robbie Rhodes for your dancing and listening enjoyment.
 We have produced a table favor which is sure to be a favorite, and will be a collector’s item in years to come.  Registrants will also receive a piano roll.
            We’ll have things going on all the time, and we have some surprises planned for you.
            Our hotel is only a block from the bus which takes you to Universal City if you wish to spend time there.
            Sunday there will be many open houses within a 50-mile radius, and if we have enough interest we will have a bus trip to four newer collections which haven’t been seen before by most of you. They will feature mechanical music, automata, arcade, and prize-winning classic sports cars, all in fabulous settings.
            If you have extra time, there are museums, Broadway shows, Disneyland, and historic places such as the William S. Hart Ranch, the Gamble House, the Getty Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Peterson Auto Museum, the magnificent Pantages Theater,  the Mann Chinese Theater with its hand and footprint display, (formerly Grauman’s Chinese), Disney’s El Capitan Theater with organ concerts and movies, Hancock Park with the La Brea Tar Pits where much of the supply of prehistoric animals were discovered.  There is also downtown L.A. with the Orpheum Theater, the Bradbury Building, the Music Center and the new Disney Concert Hall, Olivera Street, and Union Station.
            Other attractions are the Old Town Music Hall (Home of the Mighty Wurlitzer) and the Santa Monica Pier.
            If you want to go to Downtown or Hollywood, the bus is available at a cheap rate, only 90 cents plus 10 cents for a transfer for seniors.
            More time?  Well, California has so much to offer from the Gold Country, Lake Shasta, the Redwoods, beaches, mountains…  Yosemite is one of the prettiest spots on the planet as far as spectacular scenery.  Lake Tahoe, Death Valley with Scotty’s Castle, and to the South, San Diego has a huge zoo, well worth seeing,  the Maritime Museum, the Wild Animal Park and more.
 Are you a gambler?   There are several Indian Casinos with a full range of games of chance, the Morongo Casino being near San Bernardino.  Others are located in areas like Solvang, where there is also great antique shopping, including Automatic Music. The Queen Mary is to be found in Long Beach, as is the Aquarium of the Pacific.
            For MBSI members, after Convention, spend nearly a week in the So. Cal. Area and then fly to Chicago for the Lake Michigan chapter meeting at the home of Jim and Sherry Krughoff on the following Saturday.  You need to be a chapter member to do this, which costs only $10 per year.
            For current updates, you can go to YouTube (Coming soon), put in AMICA convention, 2008.  There will be current video updates.
            Leslie Hoffman is also setting up an informational YAHOO group ... where you can ask questions or also get current updates.  Click here if you are interested in joining the
