Word Searching - AMICA CD's and Web Site by Terry Smythe Two years ago I archived the whole of AMICA Technicalities out onto a CD in Acrobat PDF format, which eventually became an insert into an issue of our AMICA Bulletin. At that time, I was working with an older version of software, the only that I had at the time. It purported to provide a text search capability, but as it turned out, somewhat disappointing. I then relied upon title, author and keyword indexes that I prepared at the time using spreadsheet software that came with my computer. Those indexes are text searchable, although article titles are often inadequate. I had hoped that the indexes I developed and provided would suffice, but it now appears that the ability to search through the files on specific words of choice will be a desireable feature. So I revisited these 2 year old computer files using current software that I have since acquired. This newer version of the software does a much better job of building an internal word index to facilitate specific word searching, using Adobe Acrobat's free Reader. For those members so inclined to have updated files in their personal home computers, the updated, modified Technicalities PDF files have been uploaded into our AMICA web site, accessible through the Members-Only portal. They may be freely downloaded by members. Their file names are identical, and may safely over-write the older files of the same name if you have already transferred them from the CD into your computer. The Billings Rollography CD enclosed within a later edition of our AMICA Bulletin contains PDF files that are fully searchable by a chosen word. These files were assembled using word processing software that created the PDF files, preserving text searching capability. Therefore the PDF Rollography files on our AMICA web site need not be downloaded as they are the same as on the CD. Similarly, the AMICA Bulletins in PDF format on our AMICA web site were created using current software that does an excellent job of building internal word indexes simultaneous with their creation. All have word searching capability. Enjoy! |
